This research, authored by Awudu Hansmittson Ismaila as part of his Master of Philosophy in Global Leadership program at the Institute of Professional Studies (now UPSA), investigates how different expansion strategies affect the growth of charismatic churches in Ghana. The study compares two dominant models — the Episcopal model, characterized by centralized governance, and the Business/Franchise model, which adopts decentralized, entrepreneurial structures.
Using data from 100 charismatic churches, the research applied statistical analyses (correlation tests, paired sample tests, and descriptive statistics) to determine which strategies contribute most effectively to church growth. The findings reveal that church growth is positively correlated with strategic planning, with prayer, evangelism, service structure, membership welfare, and sermon type identified as key growth drivers. The Franchise/Business model produced better growth outcomes than the Episcopal model, and relationship-oriented leadership styles were found to foster higher levels of growth.
The study concludes by recommending that charismatic churches seeking sustainable expansion adopt business-oriented strategies and inclusive leadership approaches, aligning spiritual mission with effective organizational management.
